  1. Acupressure is not a massage modality as is often incorrectly taught. The argument that because you are touching the patient that makes it a massage modality is not right any more than saying a medical doctor is giving a massage when he palpates the patient. There are completely different principles at work and in fact massage can inadvertently activate points that cause more harm than good. The old teaching that a massage client may feel bad after a session because of toxins is pure BS. They feel bad because of the points the therapist is hitting during their massage that disrupts the flow of chi. It is like instead of pressing a puzzle piece into the correct space you just start sliding them all over the table top randomly. They will have some muscular relaxation but you may be causing havoc in many of the body systems without being aware of it which can cause more problems than they came in with. Since you and they are unaware of the connection, you won’t attribute the problem to the massage activity. And, no, massage schools do not teach any real acupressure and cause more harm than good by claiming they do. They may pick up a few tension release points but acupressure requires years of training and the same understanding of oriental medicine as an acupuncturist. A massage school is not qualified to give you that kind of in depth training and the short time it takes to learn massage is not enough to learn acupressure.
